Cold Plunge Pump Noise or Cycling On and Off? You May Have Air in the System

Unusual pump noise, on-and-off cycling, or inconsistent water flow often point to air trapped in the water circulation system.

This issue is common — and usually easy to fix.

Signs of Air in the Water System
  • Pump sounds louder than usual

  • Water flow feels uneven or “broken”

  • Chiller turns on and off repeatedly

  • Reduced cooling performance

How Does Air Get Into a Cold Plunge System?

The most common causes include:

  • Filter cup not fully tightened during filling

  • Missing or improperly installed PTFE (Teflon) tape

  • Silicone gaskets misaligned or displaced

  • Water level below the tub inlet (chiller outlet), causing low inlet pressure

Why Air Causes Problems

When air remains trapped:

  • The pump may run dry

  • Water flow becomes unstable

  • Noise increases significantly

  • Pump lifespan may be affected

How to Remove Air From the System
  1. Fill the Ice Bath Tub until water reaches the inlet level

  2. Close the water valves at the tub connection

  3. Open the filter cup, fill it completely with water, and tighten

  4. Reopen the valves and start the chiller

If flow is still inconsistent:

Briefly loosen the chiller outlet until water flows, then reconnect.

⚠️ Prolonged air blockage can impact both water flow and pump health.
